As India’s tiger population grows, a rise in tiger deaths is expected, say officials. However, the real concern arises when the animals fall prey to ‘revenge’ killings.
In August 2023, two tigers, aged three and eight, were found dead in a water body beside the poisoned carcass of a cow near Avalanche in the Nilgiris. The tiger had earlier wandered into the village and killed the cow. In retaliation, the owner had laced the carcass with pesticides to target the animal that he believed posed a threat to his livelihood.
